So there is a new type of model kit in town, but are they worth bothering with? In short, absolutely!
Known as Blokees (pronounced “Blok-ees” and not “Bloke-ees”), the best way to describe the kits is as a kind of pocket-sized take on model kits that focus primarily on the Transformers franchise, although collections based on Kamen Rider, Ultraman and more recently, Marvel, have been made as well.
In terms of complexity, they are equivalent to SD Gundams fun in construction, but at the same time, some kits also feature light-up features and pre-painted parts.
The potential for poseability with these kits is not always seen in conventional Transformers figures, which often sacrifice articulation in favour of retaining the ability to transform.
Much like Bandai’s collection of Gundam model kits, there are various different grades that feature differing levels of complexity, quality and detail.
The cheapest is the Galaxy Version boxes, a set of blind-bag kits that do something quite unique for model kits by adding the element of surprise. Each blind box collection features 9 model kits to collect and a secret 10th figure (of which generally has a 1/36 chance to be opened).
Outside of Mega Blocks, Lego, gachapon and technical Kinder Surprise, nobody really does buildable blind-box kits, and none of them are of the quality and detail of Blokees.
Outside of the entry-level Galaxy Versions, there are also the Classic Class models, which are closer to a High-Grade gunpla in terms of detail and complexity, featuring various classic versions of the characters from not only Generation 1 but also the Michael Bay films and even Beast Wars.
Finally, there is the Action Edition, closer to a Master Grade in spirit and featuring both additional detail, authentic colours, lights, accessories and a standardised skeleton to make them easier to pose and easier to modify.
In short, if you are a fan of gunpla but want something a bit different different to build, they are absolutely fantastic fun and worth buying (at least a Galaxy Edition box if you want to dip your toe!). If they commit to the MG-level experience of the Action Edition, Blokees could become something really special.
